Nature Art Collection
explore local nature. one color at a time.
The Nature Art Collection is a growing library of nature-based art and learning tools developed by The Urban Studio as an evolution of our watershed engagement work across the Chesapeake Bay region.
Developed through projects like Clean Water Montgomery with the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection and expanded through the EPA Thriving Communities Grantmaking Program, the collection translates technical environmental concepts into accessible visual learning tools.
Through hand-drawn illustrations of regional flora, fauna, and stormwater systems, the collection helps people connect what they learn on the page to what exists in their actual neighborhoods. When someone learns the structure of a leaf or traces a watershed pattern, they begin to identify those same systems in their neighborhood. Recognition strengthens awareness. Awareness supports stewardship.
The collection functions in two primary ways:
A Tool for Community Engagement
At public events, workshops, and Design Lab programs, the sheets create low-barrier entry points into environmental conversation. Participants engage through art first, then build understanding.
Standards-Aligned Educational Resource
The activities are structured to support classroom integration and align with K–12 learning objectives. Teachers can incorporate the materials into science, art, and environmental literacy lessons without requiring specialized equipment.
