Lamps for Walls and Tables

Home Decor

Lighting has come a long way since the days when a fire or sunlight were man’s only options, and ceramics are a large part of the modern lighting scene. Many lighting fixtures are base pieces that will be retained for many years, so it is important to find the right design and color. Over the last century, ceramic artists have been creating lamps that will stand the test of time.

Furniture pieces that require small tables by them are often the base for lamps, and decoration is part of their function. These pieces are fairly basic, and they are comprised of a base enclosing the electrical cord, a light bulb and a lampshade. Ceramic bases are often sought by decorators because they are designed to be visually pleasing while performing an important function. Lamps come in all different heights and colors, and the possibilities appear to be endless.

Tall lamps that will stand against a wall are often made of several different materials, and ceramic pieces in them are often designed to add a pop of color. If the lamp base is made of metal, a ceramic inlay adds a material that will last as long as the rest of the lamp. This is important because lampshades may be changed for different fashions of a room, but the base can be reused in many different settings. This gives the piece a greater value in the long run and makes it more desirable for decorators.

Wall sconces are once again in fashion, and ceramic artists are beginning to break into this important market. While metal has dominated this area of home décor for many centuries, it has a few drawbacks that make ceramics a better choice. Metal is a heavy material, and modern ceramic pieces can be made to look like metal without the weight. There is no concern that ceramics will rust, experience metal fatigue or require repainting every few years.
